Expo 2015 - Sugarcane: new energy to move a cleaner world

On the 2nd of June, at the auditorium located on the ground floor of the Brazilian Pavilion at Expo 2015, the Brazilian Sugarcane Industry Association (UNICA) and the Brazilian Trade and Investment Promotion Agency (Apex-Brasil) will host a seminar focused on sugarcane and its by-products, like ethanol, bioelectricity, bio-plastics, bio-hydrocarbons (among others being developed), as efficient and sustainable solutions to solve or reduce the impact of many of the pressing challenges the world is facing, like global warming. Over the last 30 years, the sugarcane industry underwent major and continuous technological improvement. Today, sugarcane is the basic input for a diverse and growing range of value-added products, including sugar, ethanol, bioelectricity, bio-plastics, bio-hydrocarbons, that can replace gasoline, diesel, plastics and more. With its impressive GHG (Greenhouse Gas) savings, sugarcane can contribute to solve or reduce the impact of many of the pressing challenges the world is facing, like global warming. Almost 50% of all the energy utilized in Brazil comes from renewable sources. That’s three times the global average, an achievement that can certainly be an example for the rest of the world as well as giving Brazil a leading role in the search for solutions to solve the above-mentioned global warming and climate change problem. Food and energy choices affect the environment and people worldwide; during the seminar participants will discuss those choices focusing on the mechanism that induces the improvement of sustainable practices in the sugarcane sector. Representatives from the Government, the Private Sector and NGO will attend the seminar in order to offer views from three different types of actors. The seminar will be opened by a keynote from Mr José Goldemberg, Member of the Brazilian Academy of Science and former Minister for Science and Technology. Among participants: David Barioni Neto, President Apex-Brasil; Eduardo Leão de Souza, Executive Director UNICA; Sven Sielhorst, Coordinator International Sugarcane Programme; Simon Usher, CEO Bonsucro; Andre Meloni Nassar, Secretary for Agricultural Policy.
