Egypt and Kenya win gold at FIBA 3x3 Africa Cup 2023

Home side Egypt (Men) and Kenya (Women) came away with the gold medals at the FIBA 3x3 Africa Cup 2023 in Cairo, Egypt on December 3. 

In the men's category, Egypt bookended a perfect run in the competition with a strong 18 - 15 win over Nigeria. Ahmed Mohamed led his side in scoring with 7 while Mido Taha added 6. Amr Zahran capped off a 5-point display with a thunderous dunk to seal the tie in favor of the home side. 

Ramy Basha was crucial for his side, picking up 18 points over the tournament along with huge rebounds that paved the way for his success. His impact led him to win the MVP award. He led the Men's Team of the Tournament alongside Robert Chima Ukawuba (Nigeria) whose dynamism led Nigeria to silver and top scorer Elly Randriamampionona (Madagascar) who picked up bronze. 

In the women's side, Kenya shocked the world in the final, going up against home side Egypt. Both sides were undefeated on their way to the final, but Egypt enjoyed the advantage for most of the game. Steps away from victory with a 19 - 13 lead, Egypt saw the gold medal slip away as Kenya mounted a comeback. Natalie Mwangale who had been immense all tournament called game with a huge buzzer-beating two to seal the improbable win for Kenya. Madina Okot was the undeniable star of the game with a whopping 11-point, 18-rebound performance. 

Natalie Mwangale however, was the light for Kenya all tournament. Her offensive and defensive prowess made them a clinical force. She took home the MVP award, leading the Team of the Tournament alongside Egypt's Raneem Mohamed who put up 23 points throughout the competition along with a fantastic all-round performance; and Harisoa Hajanirina (Madagascar) who led her side to Bronze.

In the U17 Africa Cup, which took place also in Cairo on November 30, Egypt won gold in both the men and the women's categories.
